Mixed, cruisy, entertaining - one of the stalwarts of the Manchester scene.
Manto
46 Canal St Tel: 0161 236 2667
Pop bunnies and posers - great if you want to hang from the balcony and blow that whistle! Now seemingly gay again. Good restaurant with trick roof
Cellar Bar
Canal St, Tel: 0161 237 9117
Continental beers in a small, intimate ...erm cellar like venue (without the benefits).
Metz
Canal St, Tel: 0161 237 9852
The place to take your Mum and any liberal friends who can't quite manage The Rembrandt. Good food. Nice atmosphere; they spend on candles what they save on electricity. Mind you don't fall on your arse tackling the deck steps.
The Rembrandt
Sackville St/Canal St, Tel: 0161 236 2435/1311
Everyone knows the 'Rem. Whether they like it or not is another matter. Probably one of the few remaining truly gay venues in town. Typical crowd is the older, bigger type, stopping off on the way to Chains. Renovation finished- results mixed but much easier to get to the bar! Most people though think its the best BAR in town. A doddle to pick up in...Opens late at the weekends now - unfortunately this means they have to pretend to have a disco.
Via Fossa
Canal St, Tel: 0161 236 8132
Crinkly Bottom meets your old primary school. The Best Designed Bar I Have Ever Been In. Mixed crowd (including some straights who slip through). Non-threatening and pleasant atmosphere, lots of theme nights etc. Have to queue with the straights at the weekend.
Prague V
Canal St, Tel: 0161 236 9033
Opens till 1.00am Fri, Sat, Sun (I think). Brick and steel palace. Getting str8er but still protests that it's gay space, Bar with cred and plenty of special nights. Gets very busy, large queues....you have been warned.
Velvet
Canal St, Tel: 0161 236 9003
Fab, groovy bar. Initial crowds seem to have eroded, due, I think, to it being a bit isolated from the rest of the Village. Worth a visit for the decor alone. Regular jazz on Sundays. Selective (Martini ad?) door policy.
Napoleon's
Sackville St, Tel: 0161 236 8800
In need of a lick of paint. Not to my taste...but see club entry.
New York New York
98 Bloom St, Tel: 0161 236 6556
Not the fault of the bar, but I spent one of the most unpleasant nights of my life here. Gets very busy - careful you don't fall down the steps, and have patience while trying to get a drink. Cabaret and other performances.
Company Bar (was Q Bar)
28 Richmond St, Tel: 0161 237 9329
Not been, as yet. Dress codey.
Vanilla (was Dotz Piano Bar)
Sackville Street, between McTuckies and Clone Zone
Venue for the genetically female
Bar 38

Place for straights...money making machine (for its owners). A sign of all that's wrong with the Village at the moment
Thompson's Arms

Not been, not likely to!
Churchills
Chorlton Street
Nicely fitted pub, attracts mixed crowd
Hollywood Showbar
Bloom Street (part of New York New York) Tel: 236 6151
Ghastly or camp fun, depending on your outlook on life
Bar Confidential
Whitworth Street (near Chains)
Part of the Chains complex, holds MSCMSC on Fridays. Used to be a good way to get into Chains for free. Just don't go in the bogs without a torch!
Abbeye
Canal Street, next to Manto's
Beer and Muscle Bar...not Bear and muscle-mary, very odd addition to Canal Street.
Slug and Lettuce
Canal Street, Up near Velvet
very schizophrenic venue - straight when it suits, gay when it suits...very busy, very pricey, but can be a good night out
